What am I doing??

My name is Iain, and I like a challenge.  I also like being out on the water.  I first stood on a Paddleboard in 2007 (see below) and was hooked. As someone that spent a year trekking from Vladivostock, Russia back to the UK, the idea that I had access to another form of transport to explore new territory was hugely appealing.

Living in london at the time and escaping to the south west to get out in the surf, SUP offered me a chance to get on the river at the end of the street. Any excuse to be on the water and seeing the world from a different angle and perspective.

Having completed multiple challenges over a number of years including Belfast Marathons, an Ultra-marathon, 3 Peaks Challenge, Etape Caledonia and Duathlons, It was only a matter of time before a good night out with friends evolved into conjuring up a Stand Up Paddleboard Challenge and in 2011 my 2 best friends, my brother and I set about Paddleboarding the Thames.  Becoming just the second people to complete the 220 mile ‘source to sea’ navigable route from Lechlade to Southend-on-Sea.

It is my firm believe that Stand Up Paddleboarding is something that can be enjoyed by everyone.  There is a method and style to suit everybody, from youngsters splashing around with their parents, to the surfer dude and dudettes that likes to ride the waves, to the tourer who likes to take their board wherever they go and explore the local coastal, river or lakeland scenery.

I am passionate about Stand Up Paddleboarding and the positive experience and impact it has on people.  I welcome you to SUP Hub NI to come and try it for yourselves, and if you have already tried it and liked it, come and let’s build a community of like minded Paddlers in Bangor.
